Our story
How a remote-work road trip during COVID turned into a new home in West Palm Beach, Florida.
The drive south
In December 2020, during the darkest stretch of COVID, my work went remote. My wife and I packed up our young daughter and our two dogs and drove south toward West Palm Beach with no real plan. By Delaware she was ready to turn around, and honestly, she wasn’t wrong that it was a little crazy. We kept going anyway, stopped in South Carolina, and reached West Palm Beach in January 2021. We spent three weeks working remotely and fell in love with the place. I’m so grateful she said yes to the adventure.
Real estate had been part of my life since the summer of 2012, when I read Investing in Real Estate and bought my first rental that October. In West Palm we figured we could host a better short-term rental than the one we were staying in. We couldn’t decide between two, so we bought both. By the summer of 2021 we had added two more. We feel incredibly blessed.
The decision over coffee
On November 5, 2021, we went away for our fifth wedding anniversary. The next morning we sat with coffee on a deck over the Delaware River in Narrowsburg, New York, and made the call together. We’d sell the house, reinvest in real estate and move to Florida. If we didn’t love it after a year, we’d move back. We never did.
